Reflection

Some Questions

  • Work out the implications of the sins of omission and indifference in our own society.
  • Are the three harvests (4: 6-12) a summary of our country over the last 1000 years or a picture of three different parts of the world in our generation? Just where do we fit and what can we do about it?
  • Count the number of times Amos seems to strike hope and then lose it. What do you think was going on in his mind to cause his mixed feelings? Think of someone going through the same experience or a time when you went through it yourself. Were the causes the same or different?

Some Activities

  • Re-read Amos 5:14-15. Cf Micah 6: 8, Deut 6: 4-5, Lev 19: 18 and Luke 10: 27. If this is the core of Judaism and Christianity what else do we need? Without reference to the traditions make a list of not more than five things that matter..
  • Count the number of times Amos seems to strike hope and then lose it. What do you think was going on in his mind to cause his mixed feelings? Think of someone going through the same experience or a time when you went through it yourself. Were the causes the same or different?
