Some Questions
- How honest are we when we reject a God who destroys his enemies? How honest when we proclaim a God of justice and peace? Is it really just a matter of whether we like what is happening?
- If you were able to ‘design a God’, beginning with the many ‘gods' around the world in history, or even starting from scratch, how would you balance the need for a God of power and might who will protect you and at the same time protect your ‘victims?
Some Activities
- Write a few simple sentences (not more than 100 words) for a child, an unbeliever, or a person of limited understanding, setting out your picture of God or set out the picture of God which comes across most powerfully in your church. Compare it with those of Nahum and Obadiah? What is missing? What is added?
- Identify ‘Nineveh’ or ‘Edom’ in your today’s world. Who they are, what they are up to, with what motives and with what results? Re-read these texts several times, at intervals of days if possible, and see what light your experience throws on the text and what light the text throws on your experience.
- Focus on some recent disaster. Earthquake, volcano, flooding, etc. Recall the rescue operation The costs and the commitment of the rescue workers. See if you can find out what happened to the community when the media moved on to something els,. or imagine how the follow-up might be different.
